Present // Nusa Penida Island

Global Nomadic Ltd has been working to address wildlife rehabilitation issues, using a holistic approach. Setup in 1999 to work on Orangutan Rehabilitation in Tanjung Puting National Park, central Borneo, they have now expanded their operations to Nusa Penida, a small island next Bali.
Their holistic approach seeks to address all variables in wildlife rehabilitation, including reforestation, community development, eco tourism and agro-forestry. They aim to create a better environment and future for wildlife in Indonesia using all means necessary, and not simply focusing on a narrow range of indicators or variables.
The project in Nusa Penida was started in 2004, using the same holistic approach, but centered around protecting Bali’s bird populations. They have created a Bird sanctuary on the small island neighboring Bali, where Bali Starlings (already extinct in the wild), Mitchell Lorikeet, lesser silver crested cockatoo, mostache parakeet, java sperrel, to name but a few species which are now thriving in their new protected habitat.

•    Land Speculator
The number ofpotential possessed by the islands of Nusa, particularly in the field of tourism has attracted so many investors. Beside attract the investors, Nusa islands which today has developed into tourist areas have also attracted the interest of land speculator.Many of them purchased a lot of land in Nusa (beach front specially), which is currently still has a fairly cheap price. Later they will resell the land at the right time and they’ll get a lot of profit from that.

•    Live livelihood – seaweed farmer
Local peoples in Nusa mainlivelihood is as seaweed farmers. Others are working in the tourism sector and supporting tourism sector. But some of them, particularly in the area of ​​NusaPenida is also still working as a farmer. Almost all of them work in coconut or corn plantation.

•    Transmigrant
NusaIslands, can be regarded as an isolated island. We can say it like that because for some peoples in Nusa, it is still very hard for the sometimes to get they clean water, electricity supply, or any other entertainment needs. Due to these factors, the local Nusa and also the central government's impose the transmigration program. The transmigration program was held for nearly 62 years by the government of Indonesia. During this period there are so many migrants from Nusa scattered in various regions in Indonesia.

•    Windmill-Electricity
Due to the danger of Global warming, the State Electricity Company (PLN) Bali making a environmentally friendly energy sources such as Wind Power (windmill) Generator (PLT Bayu) in Puncak Mundi, Gunung Rata Hamlet,  Klumpu Village, Nusa Penida, Klungkung. Two windmill was already built in 2005 and 2006. On 2007 PLN started to worked on seven (7)  additional units. It makes Nusa Penida now have 9 windmill as their new electricity energy resources.
Three (3) units windmill capable of generating 85 KW, and six (6) other up to 80 KW. The development cost of the windmill is around IDR 3.5 billion per unit  and can be last up to 50 years. Besides being more environmentally friendly, it will be more cheaper to operate than diesel and or use other fuels.The windmill operation itself is by using wind with a speed of minimum 6 meters / sec.
Until now, Nusa Penida has generated 16 million KWH in operation since 2005 and local government estimated the cost savings is up to Rp 200 million. Electrical energy that generated by the windmill now can be enjoyed by other residents in the others islands of Nusa Penida : Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Centingan. Understandably despite being in the electrical system for this three islands have been united by a single system of 20 KV electrical distribution network. Source
