Travel Info to go to Nusa Penida Island Island

Traveling to Nusa Penida is the largest of three islands off the south eastern coast of Bali, the others being Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.
Totalling some 200 square kilometres, Nusa Penida is much larger than the better known Nusa Lembongan. However, tourist infrastructure is very limited here. It is though an island of stunning natural rugged beauty, and tourism-related development plans have been rumoured and mooted to no effect for many years now.
Due to a lack of natural fresh water, little is grown or produced on Nusa Penida, and even some basic foodstuffs come in by boat. Visitors should therefore expect higher prices than in Bali, and not bank on any tourism-related luxury items being available for purchase here. Plan accordingly — this is as off-the-beaten-track as you can get and still be in the Province of Bali.
Nusa Penida has also become an unofficial bird sanctuary for endangered Balinese and Indonesian bird species, including the critically endangered Bali Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi) [1]. In 2004 the Friends of the National Park Foundation (FNPF)started an introduction program onto Nusa Penida of the near-extinct Bali Starling. Over 2 years from 2006 , 64 birds were released into the wild. By the spring of 2009, 58 chicks had successfully hatched in the wild and in 2010 there were estimated to be over 100 birds. Despite many similar release bird projects in the West Bali National Park that have failed because of poachers, this has been by the far the most successful project to prevent the Bali Starling from becoming extinct and is because the Nusa Penida population actively protects the birds. In 2006 all villages unanimously passed a local regulation making it an offence to steal or threaten the life of the birds. Source

How to get There // Nusa Penida Island

If you want to go to Nusa Penida Island from Bali, the easiest and cheapest way, if you go from the capital, Denpasar is by getting to the Sanur beach and using some traditional public boat called 'jukung'. Jukung will cost you maximum around IDR. 40.000 and it will take around 90 minutes to reach Nusa Penida.

There's another option you can take if you go from Sanur. You can also take some speed boat which is a lot more expensive than jukung (could be IDR 50.000 more expensive) but also a lot more faster (50 minutes). If you want to travel with your own car/ motorbike to Nusa Penida (please noticed its only for Nusa Penida, not Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan) you can go Padang bay (on the east part of Bali,an hour drive from Denpasar) to take a ferry boat (Kapal Ro-Ro and Kapal Re-Re).

This boat will take you crossing the Badung Strait, and the trip will take around one hour to get to the Toya Pakeh Harbor in Nusa Penida Island. Beside from Padang Bay and Sanur, you can also take some jukung from Kusamba (cost you around Rp. 25.000).

There are public boats from from Sanur, Kusamba or Padang Bai in East Bali. Source

Traveling to Nusa Penida

Renting a motorcycle is the most practical option, and this will cost you about Rp 80,000-120,000. Look for vendors in Toyopakeh and Sampalan (or more likely, they will find you!). You may be able to find a rental vehicle but they are not common.
Some visitors from Nusa Lembongan arrive with rented pushbikes - make sure you get permission to take the bike off Nusa Lembongan first. You should note that roads in Nusa Penida are rough, hilly away from the north coast, and in remote areas no more than stone-strewn tracks.
Local public transport is in small old bemos or on the back of a truck. These vehicles ply the north coast road with some regularity, but elsewhere on the island do not bank on anything.

Nusa Penida Accommodation // Awesome

There are some small, simple homestays and bungalows on Nusa Penida. These are in the north between Toyapakeh and Sampalan. There is nothing even approaching mid-range accommodation though. Visitors to the island often do not book ahead and instead turn up and take their chances.
Visitors wishing to explore the remote, rugged areas of the island in the high centre and south may be able to find informal accomodation with a local family by asking a head of village (Kepala Desa). The only other alternative away from the north coast is camping.
In the other island near Penida, specially in Nusa Lembongan, there's so many guest hiuse, hostel, villa, and hotel you can choose. Most of the villas and hotels on the review below also located in Nusa Lembongan. Source

He fell in love with the art of photography in early 2008, because, says Pande Kadek, I love to travel and I need to keep and treasure every scene that I witness and every spectacular view or event that I’m privileged enough to observe. After graduating from Stikom Bali, majoring in Information and Technology, Pande entered the work force by joining a local media company as a graphic designer and Journalism Photographer. He has since won several Photography Awards. Confident of his photographic ability, Pande was keen to learn more skills, and decided he would like to work in the service sector as part of a team. Here, while his technical expertise is being sharpened, he is honing his skills through the development of new ideas for special events, food & beverage promotions, and much more. 6. Crystal Bay Beach
We invite you to visit another island paradise off the South East coast of Bali. In only the 30 minutes it takes to reach this island from Sanur, you will travel back in time to a place like Bali used to be 25 years ago. Here there are still familiar, friendly, local people, there’s no traffic and the traditional way of life is still observed. Everything is fresh and you will find many unique things here. After this market, we will continue to the Giri Putri Cave Temple, a unique and incredible temple, hidden in the caves on the hillside. The entrance is deceptively small and hides the surprisingly spacious and magnificent cave inside.
